![]() Computer: MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013)External Hard Drive: WD My Passport for Mac 2TB Portable External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 ()I've looked at similar questions to mine on this website, but unfortunately not many of the answers were possible because of the slow responsiveness on my mac. The drive itself could have failed, the partition on the drive may be damaged, the data cable may no longer be good, or the drive may no longer be getting. Also, for some reason my mac still thinks the drive is there, because it still appears in finder and I have to click "force eject" in order to remove the icon.OS: macOS High Sierra version 10.13.4. I need to be able to use my external storage devices as I have a lot of large video files that I need to store and have access to and I can't afford to spend the money to get the same amount of storage is solid state format.Įxternal Hard Drive Issues on MacOS Sierra Hello All,Just some background, I got a WD 2TB External Drive about 4-5 years ago for my Mac to store movies and such, and I've never had issues with it before, but now when I plug it in I find that finder is extremely unresponsive and has a ton of trouble opening the device. My mac knows that the HDD is there the second I plug it in, but when I click on it, finder stalls and opening even a single folder on the drive can take up to 5-10 minutes.I attempted to do first aid on disk repair, but I got an error because Disk Repair was unable to unmount the device.Additionally, if I yank out the hard drive, finder and any slowed applications go back to being responsive instantly. Never had this problem with my previous MacBook, which was a 2015 Intel MacBook Pro. ![]() ![]() I know the spinning drives are the cause of the lock ups because as soon as I unplug the drives from the computer the OS and Apps become responsive again. I am using an official Apple USB-C to USB-A adapter. I am using a powered external USB hub to connect the drives to the computer so I know it's not a power issue. The drives in question are a 3.5' ATA drive from Western Digital (WD5000AAKB) and a 2. Energy saver (System preferences) already has 'put hard disk (s) to sleep whenever possible) turned off, so this must be done from the drive itself. I don't have this problem when I have just an external SSD connected. Is there a way to disable hard drives from automatically going to sleep mode (spinning down). It locks up for many seconds at a time or until I unplug (yeah I know you are supposed to "eject" before doing this) them from the computer. Whenever I have external hard drives (spinning drives, not SSD's), I am experiencing random lock-ups with a spinning color wheel when using the Finder or other Apps. It is running the current version of Big Sur. I installed this app, but every time I click on the “Update Software” button, I get an error message that says “The WD update server is currently unavailable.” I have tried this approximately 10 times over the past 48 hours, and I keep getting the error message saying the WD server is down (which in itself is beyond frustrating).Ĭan anyone please help me? Pretty much my whole life is on this Passport and I can’t lose its data.So I just recently got a new M1 MacBook Air. The only possible “fix” I have found was WD’s recommendation to install and update the WD SmartWare software. However, I haven’t found any solutions - just people all saying they’re having the same problem. I’ve been searching the internet for 2 days and I’ve seen dozens if not hundreds of people having the same or similar problem, especially with the latest Mavericks and Yosemite updates. I haven’t had the opportunity to try plugging the Passport into another computer, so I don’t know if that would work or not. I tried using a new Firewire in case it was a connection issue, but that did not work. Start up from the Recovery partition, from Internet Recovery, or from a local Time Machine backup volume ( option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility. It’s like my Mac all of a sudden stopped recognizing the external drive completely. The Passport will not show up in Finder for my Mac’s Disk Utility. I’ve had a Passport Studio 1TB for about 2 years and have used it with my late-2011 Mac Notebook (OS X Yosemite 10.10.2), connected via Firewire 400, and have never had any problems.Ī couple days ago when I plugged the Passport into my Mac, and the Passport disk starts spinning, the light turns on and it at least seems to be trying to communicate with my Mac, but after about 20 seconds it gives up and quits.
